The fifth day of the plenary council started in a very celebratory mood today. A surprise kept till this morning to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Fr. Tom Ryan, the Provincial Superior of the British Province, silver jubilee of Fr. Didier Lawson, the General bursar, and Fr. Paul Ennin, the Provincial Superior of Ghana, 20th anniversary of Fr. Francois de Paul, the Vicar General, Fr. Francis Rozario, the General Councilor, and Fr. Narcis Ogu Seka, the Provincial Superior of Côte-d'Ivoire.

The members of the plenary council are in good spirits and they are keeping the momentum going on this fifth day of the plenary council which started with work in groups during the morning session. The afternoon plenary session began with the debate on the protocol for the GA 2025, which was a continuation of the work that was already done. Before putting the document to vote, members agreed to change the dates of the completion of the election of delegates from 28th of October to 31st July 2024.

“Set apart to announce the Gospel in Africa, with Africa and from Africa!” is the theme chosen for the General Assembly 2025 of the Society of African Missions that will be held from Monday, 28 April 2025 to Sunday 18th May 2025 in Roma, Italia. This is the fruit of the group work that was undertaken yesterday by the Plenary Council regarding the protocol of the General Assembly on this fourth day of work.Unlike the 2019 GA that lasted for four weeks, the Plenary Council has unanimously agreed to reduce the duration of the GA 2025 to a period of three weeks.

The third day of the Plenary Council began with the eucharistic celebration presided by Fr. Francois du Penhoat, the Provincial of Lyon who is at the same time the host. Money matters with regard to health and retirement of the members of new entities following the previous day's discussions set the stage for the morning session. The Local Health Fund (LHF) established is under the stewardship of the various entities while the Central Emergency Health Fund (CEHF) is under the custody of the Generalate.

As the saying goes, a good day is seen in the morning. The second day of the plenary council began by Lectio Divina done in groups before breakfast. The morning session was ushered in with prayers led by Fr. Krzysztof Pachut, General Councilor, whose theme touched on leadership. In his reflection, he said that “leadership is not about watching and correcting, neither is it about telling people what to do.” The participants were challenged to look at leadership as “less about the love of power and more about the power of love.”

The Plenary Council officially started on the 12th of June in Lyon -France with a day of recollection preached by Fr. Laurent Ore, SMA the parish priest of Blessed Marcel Callo in Nantes. Reflecting on “Living according to the Heart of Jesus,” the 23 participants of the third Plenary Council were invited to emulate the virtues of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The clock is ticking, the light is radiating, voices are heard in the down chapel of the SMA Generalate house, usually silent during the summer.
